Chapter 3: Stitched Heart

"There, good as new!" 2 exclaimed.

5 touched the leather patch that concealed his broken eye tenderly. He chuckled, sounding relieved, but tired. "Heh. I can concentrate on one thing now . . . Thank you, 12."

2 smiled heartedly. "That's the spirit, m'boy," he said, lightly slapping 5's shoulder. Then he turned to 12. "And you, young lady. Thank you for helping him."

12 nodded but said nothing, breezing a few steps back. She felt so strange. Like she couldn't stand to be around 5 and 2. Not that she didn't like or appreciate them; it was just a feeling.

"2?" 7 appeared in the doorway. "I hate to be a burden, but . . . her condition is critical."

12 looked 7 up and down. 7 was the only other female next to her and 10. She was a lot lighter than the other stitch-punks, being bleached white, with strong limbs and open eyes. 12 recalled how brave and impressive 7 had acted while trying to find others and couldn't help but feel a trickle of respect come into her gaze. Then she felt her eyes widen. ". . . 10?"

"The . . . the child?" asked 2, his face creasing with worry.

"What happened to her?" 12 said.

7 shook her head. "She's not going to make it unless 2 helps her."

2 swallowed, feeling the pressure, but he squared his shoulders and nodded.

7 ushered 5, 2, and 12 into a smaller room, lit by a candle. 12 gasped at the sight of 10. She looked . . . she looked . . . 12 couldn't bring herself to finish the thought.

2 sighed and walked closer to her body on the table, his eyes pained. "My, what a mess they made of you, my dear . . ."

"Is she going to be alright?" 12 demanded. She couldn't help but feel entirely responsible. She was the one who'd left 10 alone, scared, and defenseless. She should have at least dragged 10 with her. She should have---

"We must work quickly to save her, 5," 2 said, interrupting 12's thoughts.

"But . . . but how?" 5 asked.

"There are supplies we can use. We haven't time to spare." 2 looked at 12. "My dear, you needn't watch us," 2 said softly. He could tell 12 had some connection to 10, and he didn't want her to watch as they stitched and fixed her friend.

12 nodded, her eyes glued to the gaping hole in 10's chest.

"12 . . ." 5 slowly came up to her and put a hand on her shoulder. "We'll save her. I promise you that."

Slowly, 12 nodded, moving back, shaking off 5's kind hand. "I . . ." Her voice broke. "I'll . . . see you later."

With one last long glance, 12 left to be alone.

5 watched 12 leave quickly and had the sudden urge to follow her. He wanted to make sure she was alright. She looked so shaken seeing 10 like that. He wondered why she seemed to look . . . guilty.

"5?"

He snapped out of his revere and nodded solemnly to 2, who was gazing at him in worry. "Sorry. Let's get to work."

2 and 5 worked fiercely to mend 10. 2 stitched her flesh wounds with red thread; he tied a black cloth around 10's head to cover the scar left from the cut on her head. Finally, it came down to her biggest problem: the hole in her chest.

"Almost there . . ." 2 muttered.

5 eyed the hole with unease. "D-did she get shot . . . ?"

2 sighed heavily. "Those machines have caused her enough grief. Bring me some fabric, son."

5 glanced around. Seeing no fabric in sight, he ducked into the room where he'd been mended and found some.

"How about this?" 5 held up a long violet cloth with red hearts on it.

"Yes," 2 agreed, smiling wearily. "It befits her."

2 cut one of the hearts out and stitched it over the hole tight.

Surprisingly, 2 chuckled. 5 looked at him. "What's so funny?"

2 smiled, his specs twinkling. "She's the only one with a physical heart. Meanwhile, ours are only metaphorical."

5, at first, thought the comment was something bitter, but he saw that 2 meant no harm. "Hearts don't need to be physical, do they?"

"No, m'boy," 2 said. "Our hearts are shown through our actions."

5 smiled. "Then you've got plenty of heart, 2."

10 heard talking going on above her when she came to. Everything she saw was blurry. But slowly, everything was clear.

Her throat was dry, like it was filled to the brim with sand. She coughed and gasped, her specs fluttering to absorb all the new color. "Ugh . . ."

The two figures stopped talking and looked at her. One of them smiled. "Hello, there, my dear."

10 sat up, blinking at her body. She no longer had the scrapes she remembered, and there was something soft and comfy on her head. She felt it. Cloth? Bewildered, she poked the heart-shaped stitch over her bullet wound. "What . . . Where am I . . . ?"

"You're safe now, child."

10 stared at the two before her. They were . . . they looked like her. "Who are you?"

One of them offered a welcoming hand. The other wouldn't stop staring. "I'm 2," said the one who was talking. "And this is my friend, 5." 2 elbowed 5 to wake him up.

5's one eye blinked. "H-hello."

"Do you have a name?" 2 asked.

10's expression was making 2 chuckle. She looked completely clueless. Finally, she told him, "I'm 10."

2 helped 10 off the table and held her arms as her legs wobbled. "It's nice to meet you, 1o. Now let's return to the others."

                                                  ~*~*~

2 tried to lead 5 and 10 up to the others using the staircase, but the steps were too tall, and it would take too long to try and climb up them, one-by-one. He led them close to the outside of the church, trying to figure out a way to rise to the top, where the others were. As they searched the outside perimeter of the ruins to find a tool or something else that could help them, 5 blurted, "10, we met someone who knows you."

10 blinked. "Knows me? I don't---" She faltered. "12? 12 is here?"

"So you do know her," 2 noted.

"Yeah!" 10 said. "She and I awoke together. That's how we ended up . . ." She trailed off, wincing.

"Well, that explains a lot," 2 said. "12 was worried sick about you."

10 actually smiled. "Aw, that's nice of her."

"Hey, 10," 5 said, "was 12, when you first met her, I don't know, quiet? Lonesome, even?"

10 frowned. "Well . . . she wasn't quiet. She was a little gloomy, and hesitant, but I didn't get anything saying she wanted to be alone."

"Hmmm," 5 thought. "I wonder if she's okay . . ."

They made a turn to the left side of the church, down an alleyway with puddles and huge things against the wall. 10 stumbled a bit; she wasn't entirely used to the concept of walking yet. To keep her balance, 10 held on to 2's arm.

"Take your time, child," 2 told her patiently.

5 peered at a huge, looming shape against the wall, towering over them (like everything else). He squinted, then he gave a cry of alarm, backing into 2.

"What is it?" 2 demanded.

With a shaking hand, 5 pointed to the looming figure. It was a car, upside down and leaning against the wall, as if it had been tossed there like a toy. Visible through the windshield . . . were the skeletons of a woman and a small child still in her arms.

When 5 didn't answer him vocally, 2 said, "What is it, boy---Good grief!" It was then when 2 had noticed the skeletal corpses in the front seat.

10 gasped in pure fright, seeing the bodies, and hid her face in 2's chest.

2, shaking off the dread that had filled his mind, forced a smile and told 10 soothingly, "Ssshhh, 10. I would never allow that to happen to you."

10 peeked up at him with half open specs. She murmured gratefully, "Th-thank you . . ."

5 shook his head, feeling guilty for scaring 10 like that. "C'mon, let's get out of here."

They hurried along, and 7 came running up to them in the dark. "2! 5!"

"7!" 5 cried.

7 reached them. "I've been waiting for you guys. I was going to go---" She stopped, seeing 10 conscious, and smiled at her. "Well, well. Hello there."

10 nodded and hid behind 2 shyly.

"7, this is 10." 2 pushed 10 forward. "10, this is my friend 7."

7 grinned, crouching down to meet 10's eyes. "I like your scarf, 10. And I'm guessing you have a lot of heart, from that scar."

10 managed to smile back. "2 d-did it for me."

"Well, 2, as usual, did a great job," 7 said, smiling at 2. "You all look tired."

"Understatement," 5 corrected. "Where is everybody?"

"1 and the others are upstairs."

"Is 12 there, too?" 5 asked before 10 could.

"Yes. She met 1 and the others." 7 grimaced. "That's kind of why I wanted to come down here."
Chapter 3! :D

CHAPTER 3 -
After 5 is stitched up, 7 informs 2 of 10's critical condition, and it's revealed that 12 knows 10 (which we know XD). 12 leaves to be alone, and 5 and 2 start on 10. After she's almost complete, 2 needs fabric to cover her scar, and 5 finds some cloth with hearts on it to use (:3). 10 wakes up and meets 2 and 5; the tree begin to search for the others, and 5 accidentally sees a dead mother and child in an upturned car, which startles him and 2, also scaring 10. 2 promises that it'll never happen to her. ^^ They meet up with 7, and she says that 12 has met 1. (EVERYONE HIDE! 12 IS GONNA LOSE HER MIND! XD)

Yes, I'm trying to stay as close as I can to the events of the comic (in order, I mean).

*Let me know if any info is wrong. ^^

Yes, I know some of the info from the movie is wrong. (They go outside because they can't find a way up and try to see if there's an entrance outside.)

Also, with the comment 2 made when 10 was fixed up . . . does anyone think it was bitter? I was reluctant to put it in cause I though it sounded too bitter of 2 to say. But if he's saying it in a whimsical way . . .

Tell me what ya think! :icon2ishappyplz:

Awww this was a cute little chapter. Love how you've developed a close bond between 10 and 12, I really wanna add that to the prequal somehow. 8B (I'll work it out somehow...) You've really gotten them in character, it's amazing! :D And like I said before you're really good at describing the scenes. Loved 2's little heart quote (didn't sound bitter in the least to me) it made me go aww. The entire thing made me go awww, great work! :glomp:
